Spotlight on Silvia Vicinelli

Dear Silvia, You already had an amazing and impressive musical-career so far: The female main characters in Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar and Jekyll&Hyde…

When was the time you knew for sure that you wanted to become a musical actress?

In fact I can tell the time quite precisely. It was when I saw my first musical: “Phantom of the Opera” in Los Angeles. After seeing the musical I felt like "a light went on"... I just knew… At that time I was already actively involved singing in the pop and rock area but something was just missing…

For the last few months you have been working on your own songs, mostly pop and rock. Was it enough musical for you now? Do you need something else?

No, you can’t really say that. After so many years on musical stages I just had the feeling that I needed a new way of expressing myself musically and my songs developed out of that need.. It´s like they came “by themselves”. One day, I sat down at the piano and suddenly started writing songs… It felt as if my own songs finally “wanted out”!

Nevertheless I am sure that I´ll be on a musical stage again, some day. You definitely can combine both things. I think in Germany people think too much in categories: either you are an opera-singer or a musical-singer or a pop-singer. Personally, I rather share the way American people see it. In the US you are just a SINGER working in different “areas” of the music business.

Versatility is not only welcome but crucial to build a career in the US. There are  enough examples of Hollywood stars that all of the sudden play on Broadway or popstars singing in a musical-movie (recent example: Beyoncée Knowles in “Dreamgirls”).

Where do you receive your inspiration for you own songs? Do you work at home or rather in professional studios? Do you have all the equipment at home?

Yes, I mostly write my songs at the piano, at home. I take my inspiration from my own life and experiences, thoughts and feelings. As I said before I almost never “plan” to write a song. It´s more like the song “comes to me“. Sometimes I just feel the impulse to go to the piano and write. I own a home-studio together with my wonderful producer, pianist and co-writer Martin Morgenstern and we record nearly all of the songs there.

How did you discover Ubetoo.com? Would you describe it for those who do not know it?

I found Ubetoo.com on Stagepool. Ubetoo offers singers who write their own songs the possibility of earning money without having a contract with a record company. Of course, through Ubetoo, songwriters get also the chance to share their music with a bigger audience and to build a larger fan-base. I think the idea is brilliant. There is way too much great music that has not been signed yet and therefore doesn’t really get the chance of being heard by a large audience. It has become very hard to get record companies interested. This new development through the internet forces labels to change their old fashioned systems and adjust to the new situation. I think it´s great!

What do you like about Ubetoo.com? How do you work with this platform?

I like the „chart“-character. That in combination with the comments of the audience makes it possible for me to see exactly which songs the listeners like the most and why. This is very important because as a songwriter you´re rarely able to keep enough distance to your own songs to evaluate their real potential.

In how far became Ubetoo.com a help for your career as a songwriter?

I think the most important thing until now was, as I said, the feedback. If you decide to start a career as singer/songwriter, there is nothing more important than knowing that the audience wants to listen to your music!!!

It really helps and gives you the drive to go on.

If you could decide how your career will go on the next months, what would you wish for yourself?

At present, my greatest wish is to release my music in the form of an album and reach the biggest audience possible, so that sooner or later everyone will “have no choice“ but to sing along to my songs… :)

Thank you so much for answering our questions! We wish you the best and much success on Ubetoo….
